School Activity - Kayaking
Instructor Qualification: BCU Level 2 coach.
Venue: Beach at Orcombe Point, or occasional use of beach between groins 1 and 2
Group Size: Max 10
Duration: 25 mins on the water
Stop Decision: Too much wind, dumping surf, off shore breeze, too cold, any other good reason.
Activity Outline:
The Instructor will meet the group and ensure that they are suitably kitted out with buoyancy aids, wetsuits and footwear. A brief introduction will be given on how to use a paddle and how to steer the kayak.
Groups will then be designated an area in which they must stay. The Instructor will go afloat and ensure group control at all times. For schools, the visiting member of staff will assist him / her in this matter.
The Surf Skis are of the “sit upon” variety so students will fall off when imbalanced. In the event of someone falling in the Instructor will either instruct them to swim / wade ashore, or will reinstate them on the surf ski.
At the end of the session the students will stack the equipment on the beach.
